The Frog and Toad are recurring enemies in the Castlevania series. Frogs are said to be a sign of ill omen, while toads are referred as being the result of a demonic ritual gone wrong.
Appearances
Konami Wai Wai World
First appearance of a frog-like enemy in the series. The Tadpole appears as a giant frog with one eye, hopping about the place and attacking with its massive tongue. This is the only boss in the "Castlevania" stage the player has to defeat (the player can even skip past Dracula, which is only a minor enemy). It guards the key needed to rescue Simon Belmont III. This is also the only time where a frog-like enemy acts as a boss.
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
First appearance of an amphibian enemy in a proper Castlevania game. An endless supply of Toads (described as "Mad Frogs") spring hopping about in the swamp areas of some levels.
Super Castlevania IV
Appearing often alongside Toads are smaller and faster Frogs. They are difficult to hit and can leap fairly long distances.
Castlevania Chronicles
Similar Toads to those in Dracula's Curse appear in the swamp areas of this game.
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
The small Frogs reappear in this game, composing a major opposing force throughout most of Stage 4'. In this game, they have gained the ability to strike a long distance with their tongues. A Frog is strategically positioned after almost every pit of the first section of the stage, and due to their small size and quick jumps, failing to kill it in time can traduce in the hero being knocked back into the pit for an instant death, or at least receive some damage; so, even if they can be killed with a single hit with any weapon, it is advisable to preemptively take them from afar with a sub-weapon.
Additionally, Frogs now have the ability to swim near surfaces of water, usually doing so in large groups, reducing the already limited space the player is given to step on these areas.
In the second section of the level, there is a small puzzle involving two Frog statues the player must hit in order to open a secret passage to Iris's cell. The first Frog statue is located at the beginning of the section, and the second one near its end. Once both statues have been interacted with, a wooden beam of the hanging bridge will drop near the middle of the section, giving access to the secret path.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
In this 2.5D remake of Rondo of Blood, the Frog puzzle to rescue Iris has been changed. Now, a special blue-colored Frog appears near the middle of the second section of Stage 4', which must be lead to a pedestal on the right that stands among many Frog statues. The blue Frog will jump on the pedestal and become another statue itself, making a wooden beam to drop near the middle of the section. Take note that while the blue Frog isn't very effective in combat –only doing small hops and then high ones when near the player–, it is still hostile and can harm the player on contact. Furthermore, care must be taken not to kill it by accident. First jump over the Frog to land on its right side, taking care not to touch it while doing so, and then just approach it a medium distance so it starts following you, and lead it to the pedestal on the right.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The Frogs from Rondo of Blood reappear in this game, often appearing alongside Toads. Rather than infinitely spawning, these Toads are placed in specific locations like any other normal enemy.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
After a relatively long absence, Frogs and Toads make a return in this game, where Charlotte Aulin even gains the ability to turn either herself or Jonathan into a Frog, gaining with this access to hard to reach areas.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
The only appearance that Frogs have made in a 3D Castlevania game is as a critter in the background of The Dead Bog.

Trivia
- These enemies are possibly inspired by the 1972 horror film Frogs, where an upper-class U.S. Southern family is victimized by several different animal species, including reptiles, amphibians and birds.
- The fact that Frogs and Toads in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night drop Pizza and Fist-type weapons may be a reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A Nunchaku located in the same area where they are first encountered seems to reinforce this theory.
- Konami at one point had the license to develop and publish games under the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand, in fact being the company that has published the most TMNT games to date for the most relevant systems of their respective eras.
- The Tadpole from Konami Wai Wai World makes a cameo in a minigame in Tokimeki Memorial 4.
