A Boss is a powerful and often taller enemy that possesses more elaborate attack patterns and resilience than common foes. They are generally encountered at the end of a stage, typically inside inescapable closed rooms that force the player to fight them. In the earlier games, defeating the boss of a stage is the final challenge the player has to overcome in it to gain access to the next one, whereas in more recent games –namely those that feature a semi-open world structure instead of a strictly linear one–, bosses usually guard important items which the player can employ elsewhere to gain access to new areas and make further progress.
Description
While fighting all bosses is mandatory in many of the earlier games of the Castlevania series, which feature a strictly linear structure, semi-open world games (mainly those that fit in the "metroidvania" category) often allow the player to take different routes to complete the game and thus skip some optional bosses. The first game where this was possible is Simon's Quest, where defeating Death isn't required to complete the game. Dracula's Curse features many points where the player must choose between routes and avoid fighting the bosses of those they dismiss. However, the most significant of these instances is Symphony of the Night, the game that popularized the metroidvania structure, a model that became a staple in the series and which was reused in many of the sequels.
During a boss encounter, the background music usually changes to highlight its importance. Earlier games usually feature a unique boss theme that is played every time a boss is fought, which replaces the level's main background music during the encounter. More recent games often feature multiple boss themes, which can be played interchangeably during boss encounters, with the ones featuring the most intense melodies only being played during late-game bosses to denote both their relevancy and greater difficulty.
Types of bosses
Minibosses are minor boss encounters against stronger and often unique enemies that may also feature unique patterns, but aren't as strong or complex, nor do they have as much health as proper bosses. Sometimes, a miniboss encounter is skippable. These encounters can happen anywhere throughout a stage, while a stage can include more than one miniboss, which is more frequently the case in advanced stages (especially the final stage of a game). Some Victory Armors from Harmony of Dissonance do not respawn and may be considered minibosses.
Midbosses are similar to minibosses, they often fall somewhere in the middle between the strength, health and complexity of a miniboss and a proper boss. They are commonly fought roughly halfway through a stage and, just like proper bosses, their fights are typically unskippable once initiated. Like with minibosses, later stages can include multiple midbosses. Due to their similarities, many games blur the line between minibosses and midbosses and use the terms interchangeably. Bloodlines has midbosses in all stages, the first one encountered being the Hellhound.
Normal or regular bosses are often encountered at the end of a stage, they are the most common type of boss encounter. In classic platformer games, defeating bosses usually only grants score points and replenishes health, while in metroidvanias, they often provide more substantial rewards, such as health upgrades and large amounts of Experience, and frequently guard areas containing powerful equipment or new mobility options required to progress and access new areas. Save Rooms are also commonly found before boss rooms in these types of games, allowing the player to easily try again with full health.
Recurring bosses are fought multiple times throughout a game, often with altered attacks, arenas or increased difficulty. Dario Bossi fits this role in Dawn of Sorrow.
Degraded bosses are bosses early in the game that become normal enemies later in the game, with the same or slightly altered attack patterns. The Giant Bat from the original Castlevania is the first instance of this in the series.
Dual and triple bosses are boss encounters with two or three different, albeit similar in power, bosses that complement each other's attack patterns and sometimes have a dual attack, turning the battlefield more chaotic and dividing the player's attention. Slogra & Gaibon, as well as Minotaur & Werewolf, are famous examples from Symphony of the Night.
Collective or swarm bosses are similar to dual and triple bosses, but they consist of numerous weaker and simpler enemies, often of the same kind, that must be defeated to end the encounter. The Under Moles from The Adventure are one such type of boss encounter.
Summoner bosses usually can summon vastly inferior underlings or normal enemies to fight with or for them. The first Lesser Demon as well as Granfaloon from Symphony of the Night are such types of bosses.
Puzzle or gimmick bosses cannot be defeated primarily through direct combat and instead require exploiting of weaknesses, interaction with the environment, or solving mechanics. The Wallman from Order of Ecclesia is a famous example.
Chase bosses are initially invincible and pursue the player through a stage or sequence rather than remaining in a dedicated arena, before either being killed by the environment or becoming regular bosses later. The Behemoth acts this way in multiple games of the series.
Multi-phase bosses are more common later in the game, they can change their behavior, strength, speed, movement and attack patterns after losing a certain amount of health, often considered more difficult than the previous phase, barring the use of possible exploits. Death is often a multi-phase boss in the Castlevania series.
Optional bosses can be skipped entirely without affecting the game's ending. They can guard equipment or abilities that are not necessary to finish the game or can guard a shortcut between areas. The Fake Trio from Symphony of the Night and the Giant Bat from Harmony of Dissonance are notable examples.
Route bosses are a type of optional boss specific to certain paths in more linear games, meaning the player fights one boss or a set of bosses at the expense of another boss or set. Dracula's Curse and Rondo of Blood are notable for implementing this.
Superbosses or secret bosses are harder optional bosses found near the end of the game that usually guard powerful equipment or abilities. They are often considered more powerful or at least as powerful as the final boss, and defeating them usually means that the player should not have any problems with the rest of the game, either due to the player's personal skill or character level and equipment, thus they are often sought either for achievements, for completionism such as collecting all equipment and abilities or for fully exploring the map, or just for fun. Galamoth in Symphony of the Night, the Forgotten One in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, and Legion with Nuculais in Curse of Darkness are such examples.
Fake final bosses, when fought with incorrect conditions or with the wrong equipment, terminate the game early and present an often bad or less ideal ending. They can still unlock alternate modes in some cases. They often have their distinct music theme separate from other boss encounters. Richter Belmont in Symphony of the Night, Graham Jones in Aria of Sorrow, Dario Bossi in Dawn of Sorrow, Stella & Loretta in Portrait of Ruin, and Albus in Order of Ecclesia are examples of this.
Final bosses usually present a better ending, and often unlock alternate modes and harder difficulties for replayability, though in some games it can also unlock content for already existing save files. Some games unlock a Boss Rush Mode after the main story is completed, where the player faces off against most of the game's bosses. In some of these games, this mode also offers special rewards that cannot be acquired in the main game depending on the player's performance. Most final bosses are also multi-phase and have several forms, meaning that, after losing a certain amount of health, the boss will assume a stronger form with different and often more difficult attack patterns. The final boss of a game usually has its own music theme, often multiple themes (or variations of the main one) that are respectively played as the boss changes form. In the Castlevania series, Dracula is commonly the last boss.
